What does this mean, exactly?
The ServeNext Congressional Campaign builds awareness and challenges our elected leaders to support national service expansion. At ServeNext we believe there is all too often a disconnect between politics and service. Service without politics lacks the ability to affect systemic society-wide change. Politics without service often lacks a true understanding of community needs. In order to bring about real social justice, those involved in service must become political advocates and those working in politics must become deeply connected to their communities through service!
Are you're interested in working in your community and learning political organizing skills? We'd like to talk with you about leading a ServeNext Action Network as a Co-Chair through the end of the 2008 Election cycle. This is a unique opportunity at a critical moment for the future of national service.
2008 Action Network Co-Chair Calendar
- September 11, 2008 - ServiceNation Summit Watch Party
First find a friend who will commit to lead the Action Network with you until Election Day. Then, build an Action Network Leadership Council of at least 5 members. That's you, your other Co-Chair, and 3 more people.
Invite the Action Network Council over to your house on 9/11 to watch the presidential candidates talk about national service on CNN.
Have your Action Network Council brainstorm advocacy activities that the council will organize from now until Election Day. Your first event is just two weeks away!! - September 27, 2008 - ServiceNation Day of Action Street Team
This is the kick-off event for you Action Network. Have each member of the Action Network Council recruit 1-2 friends to come out for a few hours on the Day of Action to be part of the ServeNext Street Team. That's about 10-15 people. Equipped with clipboards, ServeNext T-shirts, and a positive-can-do-attitude the ServeNext Street Team will be deployed to highly trafficked parts of their communities to ask fellow citizens to sign the Declaration of Service. The Declaration of Service calls on citizens to make a public commitment to serve their communities, nation, and world. - October to November 4, 2008 - Engage Your Congressional Candidates
Organize your Action Network to engage Congressional Candidates 2-4 times before the end of the election! Attend town hall forums! Meet with your Member of Congress' district staff! Get citizens to sign the Declaration of Service. Get your Action Network Council together to decide how many events you can commit to organizing.
Members of the Action Network Council commit to attending at least 2 events during the final month leading up to Election Day, and recruiting at least 1 friend to attend each event.
